I've only seen occasional episodes and (more often) clips of The Dick Van Dyke Show. But I'm trying to remedy this deficiency.
And you're all well-aware that, as I do so, I'll be looking for the Shakespeare.
In an early episode, Rob and Laura Petrie are discussing Rob's family duties—a work trip is going to prevent him from seeing little Ritchie's school play.
That's when we learn about the only other school play that Rob has missed in the past:
I like the idea that Hamlet is the one role that Rob can miss. All that play boils down to, really, is a guy holding a skull.
Later, there's a dream sequence where Dick Van Dyke uses his extraordinary physicality to dance like a marionette on the end of Mary Tyler Moore's strings. I wish I could consider that a version of the play-within-the-play in Hamlet, but that would be stretching it.
The Hamlet reference is a small moment, but one should always leave them wanting more, shouldn't one? I'll keep my eyes open.
