Undermining the whole motivation is just a bit too large a statement for me, but I think you're right on with the inconsistencies that are introduced when Margaret is played in this way.

Spoiler Alert for Whedon's Much Ado!

~~~
Whedon does something similar, but he plays it differently. I'm thinking about what it means. His Margaret has the same encounter with his Borachio, but she seems to be much less of a fully willing participant.
Thanks for the comment!
kjkjhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14863005904313974654noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7581099872724683650.post-82086696092690955882013-07-03T12:09:34.126-05:002013-07-03T12:09:34.126-05:00Making Margaret such a slut undermines the whole m...Making Margaret such a slut undermines the whole motivation for the Hero subplot, namely, that sexual purity is agreed by all to be extremely meaningful and important in a woman. What schizophrenic society would blast Hero for what appears to be her disgusting carnal appetite and yet regard her trusted servant as having incurred nary a blot upon her character? You would still respect Margaret as a woman and companion after this display?
Margaret put on Hero's dress and flirted out the window; that is a degree of "wantonness" that can be reasonably condemned (if it were Hero) or excused (if it were Margaret) in this culture, but not brazen whoredom--in front of the window, even!
By making everything down and dirty, modern directors like Branagh and Weldon throw the play's moral universe into confusion.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
